[ WARNING: LONG POST]
January 7th, 2016 I broke my fibula and fractured my foot. I saved a flock of baby geese from a rabid alpaca, I didn’t stand a chance. Thankfully, the ducklings made it unscathed, I wasn’t so lucky.
Due to my injury, I wasn’t able to go on a mission trip that I was fully funded for, and I had to make it around the CBU campus in a wheelchair then crutches for the whole semester.
It’s been almost 9 months and I am still recovering from this injury. However, what keeps me going through the random shots of pain and the frustrating stretches that begin to feel mundane after a few days, is a vision I had 8 months ago as I was pleading to God, “why did this happen to me?”
The vision was of a shepherd who broke one of his lambs leg, and then flung the lamb over his shoulder while the leg healed. This was a common practice in the ancient near east, because if the lamb would wander off, the shepherd would do this in order to grow close to the lamb while it was healing. I so longed for this closeness to God and to hear that voice of the Spirit. 2016 sure wasn’t easy, but day by day it becomes more and more worth it. Sometimes crappy stuff happens just because crappy stuff happens, but I can say that through this storm I have continually tried to listen to the voice of the Shepherd, and I know that this is now my norm. In good times and in bad times, I will walk alongside the voice I am familiar with, the voice that empowers me, and the voice that gives me wisdom. God is so good. He is the good shepherd and He cares for His flock. (John 11:10-18)
